This post is inspired by watching Donald L. Nathason's videos on You Tube.
Dr. Nathanson describes the Compass of Shame. In the north he places withdrawal. In the south lies avoidance. Attacking oneself is placed in the east and attacking others is in the west. Finding balance within oneself is symbolically represented at the origin. At the midpoint one is centered.
Trauma triggers chemicals within our bodies to survive a frightful experience. This process is likened to damage control. The repetition of negativity thereafter exponentially builds upon itself. A never-ending cycle of enduring shame and blame becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
The only valid response to dealing with another individual's shame is compassion. Restoring justice is not happening when guilt is solely admonished. The missing ingredient is caring kindness.
